Foursquare Workspace

Commercial Dining Area

Having previously worked with the client on a different site—where our transformation of the canteen helped boost employee wellbeing and attendance levels by creating a warm, inviting space for staff to enjoy—we were absolutely delighted to be contacted again. This time, we were tasked with reimagining another of their existing canteens, which had become outdated, featuring plain colours, traditional furniture, and a layout that no longer met the needs of a growing workforce.

Plan

The primary objective of the project was clear: to increase the canteen’s dining capacity so that more employees could comfortably use the space at once. The client envisioned a design inspired by a Canadian-style lodge—a setting that would feel welcoming, cosy, and characterful, while still being highly durable and easy to maintain for daily use.

Working closely with the client, our design team developed a concept that combined natural materials, rich textures, and earthy tones to capture the warmth and charm of a mountain retreat. The brief also required that the space reflect the client’s brand identity and commitment to employee wellbeing. To achieve this, we integrated robust yet refined materials, balancing functionality with comfort.

The result was a plan that brought together thoughtful zoning, efficient circulation, and carefully selected finishes to create a canteen that felt both relaxing and practical—a true “home away from home” within the workplace.

Works

Step 1 – Preparation and Strip Out

Works on site began with the removal of the existing furniture, which was thoughtfully donated to Sholing Football Club for use in their new clubhouse—a gesture that aligned with both the client’s and Foursquare Workspace’s commitment to sustainability and community support.

Next, existing services were isolated, kitchen units were stripped out, and the old flooring was removed. Upon inspection, we found that the subfloor was in poor condition, requiring repair. A new screed was applied to create a level and stable base before moving forward with the installation works.

Step 2 – Installation and Construction

The first new features to take shape were the half-glazed partitions, LVT flooring, and a bespoke kitchen. The partitions helped define different zones within the canteen while maintaining an open, airy feel. The kitchen area was fitted with custom-designed cabinetry and stone worktops—each cut to different depths to accommodate a variety of food preparation and service needs.

To enhance acoustic comfort, the new partitions were constructed using 100mm metal stud framing, Gyproc Soundbloc plasterboard, and internal fibreglass insulation. Electrical upgrades included new dado trunking, floorbox layouts, and feature lighting throughout all three interconnected rooms.

A striking feature wall graphic was introduced, infusing the space with energy and character. Combined with the fresh painting and decorating works, the new colour palette brought vibrancy and warmth, transforming the canteen into a modern, uplifting environment.

New dado trunking, floorbox layouts, lighting features and other electrical components were placed throughout all three rooms in order to accommodate the updated workstations and facilities.

A stunning feature graphic wall was created along with all other painting and decorating works, where we used vibrant colours to help modernise the area.

Step 3 – The Fireplace and Soft Seating

A standout feature of the redesign was the creation of a soft seating zone centred around a faux fireplace. This inviting focal point featured FR-treated wood panelling and a stone-effect chimney for a rustic touch. A Dimplex Optimyst fire was installed, using a fine mist to authentically mimic smoke and flame movement. The area was completed with durable carpet flooring, which added comfort and acoustic softness to the space—ideal for relaxation and informal gatherings.

Step 4 – Finishing Touches and Furnishings

To complete the transformation, we introduced a variety of new fixtures, fittings, and furnishings. Carefully selected lighting elements enhanced the ambience, while a mountain lake window manifestation created a picturesque backdrop—offering staff a tranquil view that far surpasses the previous outlook over the car park.

The new furniture included extremely hardwearing tables and chairs, complemented by feature bench seating upholstered in a wipe-clean vinyl finish for practicality. Every detail—from materials to finishes—was chosen to withstand heavy daily use while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the lodge-inspired theme.

Result

When the project reached completion, the Foursquare Workspace team had the privilege of being present for the grand unveiling. The management team’s reaction was immediate and heartfelt—entering the room with wide smiles and genuine excitement. Moments later, as the main office staff toured the space, their enthusiastic responses and joyful cheers confirmed what we already knew: the project had been a resounding success.

The newly refurbished canteen now serves as a central hub of connection and wellbeing, where staff can relax, recharge, and socialise in an environment that feels both modern and comforting. The result not only exceeded expectations but also reinforced the strong partnership between Foursquare Workspace and our valued client—a collaboration built on creativity, trust, and an ongoing commitment to improving workplace environments.
