Foursquare Workspace were approached by WCR Cardiff with a clear and exciting brief: to enhance their office environment and provide a modern, engaging space where staff could work productively and relax comfortably. The client’s goal was not only to improve the functionality of their workspace but also to ensure that every employee had access to first-rate rest and recreation facilities — areas that would promote wellbeing, collaboration, and morale.
This project required a thoughtful approach to balance aesthetics, comfort, and practicality. WCR wanted a design that would bring energy and cohesion to the office, encouraging a sense of community among staff while maintaining a professional atmosphere suitable for a growing business.
Plan
The client expressed a clear desire for the space to have a modern “diner-style” aesthetic, blending comfort with character. They wanted a design that would feel inviting and relaxed while maintaining a clean, professional appearance. Our design team began by conducting detailed discussions to understand the client’s operational needs, existing layout challenges, and aesthetic preferences.
From these conversations, we produced a series of designs, schematics, and 3D renders, each exploring variations of layout, colour scheme, and furniture options. These visualisations helped the client imagine how the new environment could look and function. We placed particular emphasis on circulation flow, zoning, and accessibility — ensuring that the space would work just as well for a quick coffee break as for a casual lunchtime chat or informal meeting.
Following a thorough review process, the client provided valuable feedback, which we used to fine-tune the design details. This collaborative approach allowed us to arrive at the perfect layout — one that not only maximised the available space but also captured the bright, modern diner feel the client envisioned. Every aspect, from flooring finishes to seating configurations, was planned to enhance usability and comfort while maintaining a consistent and cohesive visual style.
Works
Once the final design was approved, our installation team began transforming the space. The refurbishment was carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption to staff and day-to-day operations.
The works began with the installation of brand-new flooring, chosen to coordinate perfectly with the new furniture and overall design aesthetic. The flooring provided a durable, easy-to-clean foundation that would stand up to daily use while reinforcing the warm, welcoming tone of the space.
Next, we upgraded the lighting throughout the area, introducing fixtures that provided bright, even illumination and helped create a clean, fresh atmosphere. Thoughtfully positioned lighting was key to achieving the modern diner look — enhancing the colour contrasts and materials used throughout the room.
With the infrastructure in place, attention turned to the furniture installation, which brought the design to life. A combination of fixed seating and loose furniture was introduced to provide flexibility and variety. The fixed tables and benches were styled to reflect the classic diner layout, giving the area structure and definition, while loose dining chairs and tables added versatility, allowing the client to easily adapt the space for different purposes and group sizes.
Every element of the furniture was selected for both aesthetics and durability, ensuring long-term performance in a high-traffic environment. The materials and finishes were chosen to complement one another — balancing sleek surfaces with vibrant accent colours that lifted the overall ambience of the space.
