Fun Room Breakout Area Fit Out
Fun Room Breakout Area Fit Out
This project was all about making the most of previously redundant space and transforming it into something both functional and uplifting for our client. The aim was to turn an unused area into a multi-purpose retreat — a place that encouraged creativity, relaxation, and social connection among staff.
Plan
From the outset, the brief was both exciting and imaginative. The client wanted a design that reflected their corporate identity while offering an entirely different atmosphere from the rest of the workplace. They envisioned a space where employees could relax, apply make-up, sit and read, or even play video games during their breaks — a dedicated zone that combined leisure, comfort, and fun.
To kick things off, we began with an in-depth discussion to understand the client’s vision, operational needs, and preferred aesthetics. We then created a mood board and 2D design document, which translated these ideas into a cohesive visual concept. The design merged the client’s brand personality with inspiration from our team — an energetic yet balanced environment blending industrial tones, bold colours, and soft textures.
The proposal balanced playfulness with professionalism, ensuring that the new space would stand out while still feeling like part of the wider office.
Works
Once the design was approved, our on-site team began the transformation. The works were carried out with precision and attention to detail, ensuring that every element of the space supported the original concept.
Step 1 – Structural and Finishing Work
We started by constructing a stud wall to conceal existing windows, creating a more controlled and intimate environment. The ceiling was sprayed to an industrial finish, leaving the services exposed for an authentic, urban aesthetic. This approach was enhanced by adding air-conditioning units and visible conduit, contributing to the raw, creative look the client wanted.
To reinforce the industrial theme, we applied Tektura brick-effect wall coverings on three of the walls, giving the room character and texture. The fourth wall was left white to maintain balance, punctuated by “go-faster” stripes that ran across the surface. These stripes flowed directly from the vibrant carpet tiles, creating a dynamic sense of movement and connecting the floor design to the overall colour scheme.
Step 2 – Feature Elements and Custom Joinery
A key focal point of the room is the custom laminated bench we built, fitted with a Hollywood-style dressing table mirror and hairdryer — perfect for staff looking to freshen up or prepare for after-work events. Carefully positioned vintage-inspired lighting completed the setup, giving the area a nostalgic, film-set feel that instantly lifted the atmosphere.
The fun factor was elevated even further with the addition of two retro arcade machines, encouraging friendly competition and providing an entertaining escape during breaks.
Step 3 – Furnishing and Final Touches
To finish the space, we selected a range of quality upholstered furniture in bold, complementary tones. These pieces not only provided comfort but also reinforced the room’s playful, energetic identity. The furniture layout was designed to create flexible zones — allowing individuals to unwind privately or socialise with colleagues.
Lighting was a particularly important finishing touch. By combining ambient, accent, and decorative lighting, we were able to tone down the vibrancy of the space where needed, creating a balanced atmosphere that shifted easily from lively to relaxing.
Result
The end result is a unique and vibrant multifunctional space that has quickly become a favourite among staff. The combination of bold design, comfortable furnishings, and fun features has completely transformed what was once an overlooked area into a central hub of creativity and relaxation.
The thoughtful use of lighting softened the room’s energy, making it welcoming at all times of day. The design perfectly balances modern industrial style with playful character — a true reflection of the client’s forward-thinking culture.
The response from the client was immediate and enthusiastic. The space was in use within minutes of completion, with staff eager to explore every corner of their new retreat. Management were equally thrilled, praising both the concept and the quality of the execution.
This project demonstrates how Foursquare Workspace can transform underused areas into imaginative, high-impact environments that enhance wellbeing, engagement, and company culture.
